Teams integration 101

Microsoft Teams is becoming one of the essential hub platforms of the company, every MS products needed and wanted to start implement their products into Teams. The OST helped the C+A.I. products by setting 101 guide on how to spin up the process.

Adding products and features into Teams became one of the top priorities for C+AI studio.

We had no idea where to begin

When senior leaderships of the studio asked me to engage for the work, I was not sure. That is because the actual implementation needed to happen on product team’s side. OST was technically not in charge of the work and did not have much context. However, there is a big gap between C+AI’s design system and Teams design system. So if OST doesn’t engage to set the bar in the beginning of the implementation, inconsistency might grow from everywhere very aggressively. So I decided to jump in.

1. Gathering people

There were just a handful of products that have done teams integration work.

So the first thing to do was gather people who have done it or people interested in doing it. We needed to sit down all together to learn about what we need to start the project. And what are the opportunities that OST could help?

2. Collect problems

Identify what problems they have and how much it costs to address the issue are essential.

OST did multiple workshop sessions with product designers who participated in the project and completed problem mapping to see where we were.

3. Initiate v-teams

Prioritize items and decide who is going to engage what item for smaller v-teams of the project.

I effectively categorize items that we need to tackle and allocate OST members into the items. So we can quickly engage those items with product designers.

4. Teams integration 101 site

As a result of multiple v-teams, we delivered a high-level guide of how the product could start the integration work with essential tools and information.

From the project, we addressed problems in these essential areas:
Definitions / Teams stakeholders / Collaborate process / Icons & Illustration guide / Color guide / Audit

Sometimes we face unexpected challenges. Don’t panic and identify what we can do and we can not do. Focus on things that are doable right now. We will use that as leverage to achieve bigger things.
